Late Again? How to Ditch the Delay and Get Paid On Time, Every Time

Girl, I don’t need to tell you—being a freelancer is like being a superhero. You’re juggling deadlines, clients, kids’ soccer practice, and trying to squeeze in a hot second for yourself. But then comes the not-so-super part: chasing down those payments. Why does getting paid have to feel like a teeth-pulling session at the dentist’s?

Here are my top tips for how I hopped off the debt-collecting hamster wheel for good.

Tip #1: Get It in Writing, Honey!

First thing’s first: no work without a contract. I mean, would you let someone borrow your car without some sort of agreement? Nope! Get those payment terms, project scope, and deadlines written down. It’s like setting the rules before you play the game. No surprises!

Be Clear About the Cash

Spell it out, sweetheart. When do you want to get paid? How? And what happens if they ghost you when the bill’s due? Setting this all up front means no awkward convos later.

Make Friends with Invoicing Tools

There’s an app for that—seriously. Tools like QuickBooks or FreshBooks are lifesavers. They send invoices, track payments, and nudge those forgetful clients when it’s time to pay up. Automate it, and go enjoy that extra slice of cake instead.

Money Up Front? Yes, Please!

New client on the block? It’s totally cool to ask for some cash upfront. It’s like a commitment ring but less sparkly, and, frankly, better. This way, both you and your client are invested from the start.

Follow Up Like a Boss

No need to be shy. Send a sweet reminder a few days before the invoice is due. If they miss the deadline, send a polite nudge. Sometimes a little reminder is all they need to get moving.

Offer Payment Options Galore

Make it super easy for them to pay. PayPal, Venmo, carrier pigeon—whatever works! The easier it is, the faster you get your money.

Have a Plan for Those Payment-Phobes

Got a client who’s always late to the payment party? Set up a game plan. Late fees, stern emails, and if things get really dodgy, maybe it’s time to bring in the big guns (like a collection agency). But let’s keep it friendly, as long and as much as we can!

Teach Your Clients Well

Sometimes clients don’t get how tough it can be for us freelancers. A little education goes a long way. Tell them how prompt payments mean better, faster service. It’s always better to set up these expectations right from the start, go over the contract terms in person or via Zoom whenever possible, answer any questions and ensure it’s all laid out from the getgo – it’s always easier to have these convos up front than to have to insert it into the middle of a relationship that’s already left the station. Remember, lady, you’re running a business, not a charity. Let’s get you paid on time, every time!

Join a Freelancer Family

Connect with other freelancers. It’s like finding your tribe. They can offer advice, support, and maybe even a few laughs over those payment war stories.
